Prilosec is available with a doctor's prescription and is commonly called by it's brand name, Prilosec. Non prescription Prilosec OTC 20mg delayed release tablets is sold over-the-counter for frequent heartburn only. Prilosec belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, called PPI's. Common Use of Prilosec
Prilosec is used to treat * dyspepsia, * Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), and * zollinger ellison syndrome. Prilosec works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Prilosec may be used in combination with antibiotics such as amoxicillin and clarithromycin to treat certain types of * ulcers. Prilosec may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Zollinger Ellison Syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur when a tumor called a gastrinoma forms in the pancreas. The tumor, which may cause cancer, releases large amounts of the hormone gastrin. The gastrin causes too much acid in the duodenum (the first part of the * small intestine), resulting in ulcers, bleeding, and perforation.
