Symptoms of Heartburn
Almost everyone experiences gastroesophageal reflux at some time, commonly known as heartburn. Heartburn itself is a symptom. Other symptoms also caused by gastroesophageal reflux can be associated with heartburn. Symptoms can include:
- Frequent heartburn - acid indigestion.
- Belching - burping.
- A burning sensation in the chest, throat, and/or in the mid abdomen area, increased by bending, stooping, lying down, or eating, and may be more frequent or worse at night.
- Relieved by taking antacids.
- Regurgitate (throw up) stomach contents into the back of the mouth, leaving a sour or bitter taste.
- Salivate (produce saliva) excessively.
- A dry cough.
Frequent Gastroesophageal Reflux Leads to Additional Complications Including:
- Difficult or painful swallowing
- Sore throat
- Hoarseness or change in voice
- Coughing
- Laryngitis
- Wheezing
- Asthma symptoms
